Top Cycling Routes in Seoul (Part 4): “Jungnangcheon Stream Bike Path”

Looking for the perfect cherry blossom cycling course in Seoul? Today, I’m sharing a scenic route that’s absolutely beautiful this time of year.

The Ultimate Guide to Cycling from Seoul to Uijeongbu: The Jungnangcheon Trail

Looking to escape the bustling center of Seoul and see a more authentic, local side of Korea? The bike path from the Han River to Uijeongbu is one of the best-kept secrets for expat and visiting cyclists.

This route takes you away from the heavy tourist crowds of the main Han River parks and guides you north along the scenic Jungnangcheon Stream. Here is everything you need to know about this fantastic 32km ride.

Course Overview

  • Starting Point: Banpo Han River Park (Intersection of Han River and Jungnangcheon, near Oksu/Seoul Forest)
  • Destination: Uijeongbu City (Gyeonggi-do)
  • Distance: Approximately 32.2 km (20 miles)
  • Estimated Time: 2 hours to 2.5 hours (at a leisurely pace)
  • Difficulty: Easy (Mostly flat, dedicated bike lanes)

Why You Should Ride This Course

1. 100% Car-Free and Stress-Free One of the best things about cycling in Seoul is the infrastructure. This entire course is a dedicated bike path. You won’t have to worry about traffic lights, cars, or opening doors. It is pure cycling bliss.

2. Experience the Local Seoul Vibe While the Han River is iconic, the Jungnangcheon stream passes through the heart of Seoul’s residential northern districts (like Seongdong-gu, Dongdaemun-gu, and Dobong-gu). You will ride past local parks, outdoor gyms, and see everyday life in Seoul.

3. Seasonal Beauty If you ride this path in the spring, you will be treated to endless stretches of cherry blossoms and canola flowers. In the fall, the path is lined with beautiful reeds and cosmos flowers.

Tips for Your Ride

  • Convenience Stores (Pyeonsuijeom): Unlike the main Han River, convenience stores directly on the path are a bit less frequent as you go further north. Grab some water and snacks before you leave the Han River area!
  • Mind the Pedestrians: This path is shared with local residents walking and running. Always keep to the right and use your bell gently when passing.
  • Getting Back: If you are too tired to ride back, you can take your bike on the Seoul Subway Line 1 or the Uijeongbu Light Rail on weekends and designated holidays.

“You can’t visit Uijeongbu without grabbing a bowl of Budae-jjigae!”

정통부대고기

Budae-jjigae (Army Base Stew) is a unique and savory fusion dish born right here in Uijeongbu. Its history dates back to the post-Korean War era when locals combined surplus ingredients from U.S. military bases—like ham, sausages, and baked beans—with traditional Korean spicy kimchi broth.

Today, it is a beloved soul food known for its deep, spicy flavor and a rich variety of toppings, including ramen noodles and chewy rice cakes. It’s the perfect high-energy meal to refuel your body after a long bike ride!
