1. A Little Escape to Jangbongdo Island
Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that take us away from our everyday routines and bring us closer to nature. This time, my friends and I packed our backpacks and headed to Jangbongdo Island, a peaceful island off the coast of Incheon, South Korea.
We were looking forward to spending a night by the sea, enjoying the fresh ocean breeze, sharing delicious food, and making memories together. It wasn’t about going somewhere luxurious or following a packed schedule. We simply wanted to slow down, enjoy the moment, and spend a little time outdoors.
And Jangbongdo turned out to be just the place we needed.

2. The Journey Begins on the Ferry
The adventure began before we even reached the island.
As the ferry pulled away from the dock, the familiar shoreline slowly faded into the distance. The open sea stretched out around us, and the cool breeze made the journey feel refreshing.
One of the most entertaining moments was feeding crackers to the seagulls following the ferry. They swooped through the air, gliding alongside the boat and catching the snacks with surprising precision. Watching them fly so close to us made the short ferry ride feel like a little adventure of its own.
It was a simple moment, but one of those experiences that makes traveling by sea so special. Sometimes, the journey itself becomes just as memorable as the destination.

3. Walking Along the Coast to Our Campsite
After getting off the ferry, we continued on foot toward our campsite, carrying everything we needed for the night on our backs.
The walk was part of the experience. With the sea beside us, we could take our time, look out across the water, and enjoy the changing scenery along the way. There was something wonderfully calming about walking toward our destination without rushing.
Backpacking isn’t always about reaching a mountain summit or conquering a difficult trail. Sometimes, it’s simply about walking with everything you need on your back, breathing in the sea air, and appreciating the landscape around you.
That walk along Jangbongdo’s coast reminded me why I love exploring places on foot. You notice more, feel more connected to your surroundings, and find joy in the little things that might otherwise go unnoticed.

4. Setting Up Our Tent Right by the Sea
Finally, it was time to set up camp.
There is something special about finding a place to pitch your tent with the ocean stretching out in front of you. We settled in, unpacked our gear, and began turning our little patch of the coast into a comfortable home for the night.
With the sea just a few steps away, the campsite felt completely different from an ordinary place to sleep. The sound of the waves, the salty air, and the endless view of the water created a peaceful atmosphere that was hard to describe in words.
After setting up the tent, we could finally sit back, take a deep breath, and enjoy the scenery. No busy streets, no crowded schedules, and no need to rush anywhere. Just the sea, our camping gear, and a little space to ourselves.
For a backpacker, moments like these are worth carrying a heavy pack for.

5. A Golden Sunset and Dinner with Friends
As the afternoon slowly turned into evening, the sky began to change its colors. The sunlight softened, the sea reflected warm shades of gold, and the horizon became a beautiful canvas of fading light.
We watched the sunset together, enjoying the quiet beauty of the moment. There was no need to say much. Sitting with friends, looking out at the ocean, and watching the day come to an end was more than enough.
Then came one of the best parts of the trip: dinner.
We gathered around our food, shared delicious dishes, laughed about all kinds of things, and enjoyed the kind of conversation that seems to happen naturally when you’re away from everyday life. The food tasted even better in the open air, with the sea nearby and the last colors of the sunset still lingering in the sky.
It wasn’t a fancy dinner, but it was a memorable one. Good food, good friends, and a beautiful view can turn an ordinary evening into something truly special.

6. The Simple Joy of Backpacking
What I love most about backpacking is how it changes the way I experience time.
At home, it’s easy to get caught up in work, responsibilities, and the endless list of things to do. But when you’re out in nature, carrying your belongings on your back and setting up camp somewhere beautiful, life starts to feel a little simpler.
You appreciate the warmth of a meal, the comfort of sitting down after a long walk, and the beauty of a sunset that you might otherwise miss. Even the smallest moments seem to become more meaningful.
Jangbongdo gave us the chance to step away from our routines and enjoy these simple pleasures together. It reminded me that a great trip doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. Sometimes, all you need is a backpack, a tent, a ferry ticket, and a few good friends.

7. Jangbongdo, A Place Worth Returning To
Looking back, this trip was about much more than spending a night outdoors. It was about the excitement of the ferry ride, the seagulls chasing snacks, the peaceful walk along the coast, the feeling of sleeping beside the sea, and the golden sunset we shared with friends.
These are the moments that stay with me long after the tent has been packed away and the backpack has been put back in storage.
If you’re looking for a refreshing island getaway in South Korea, Jangbongdo is a place worth considering. With its coastal scenery and the opportunity to slow down and enjoy nature, it can be a wonderful destination for a short backpacking escape.
For me, this was another reminder of why I want to keep exploring the outdoors, one trip at a time.
Until the next adventure, keep your backpack ready and never stop exploring.
Ride safe, hike far, and camp happy.
