Top Cycling Routes in Seoul (Part 1): “Heart Course”

Seoul is a paradise for cyclists, offering diverse paths that stretch across every corner of the city. Whether you’re a local or a visitor, following these routes will guarantee an unforgettable riding experience.

Today, we’re kicking off the series with the most famous loop in the city: The Heart Course.

What is the Heart Course?

The “Heart Course” gets its name because the route on the map looks remarkably like a giant heart. It is a legendary circuit among Seoul’s cycling community.

  • Best Starting Points: Anyangcheon Hapsubu (Junction), Yeouido, Banpo Bridge, or Tancheon Hapsubu.

Route Overview

The Heart Course is a 66km loop that circles Gwanaksan Mountain. Starting from the Han River bike paths, you’ll ride through a scenic variety of waterways, including:

  • Tancheon → Yangjaecheon → Haguicheon → Anyangcheon The route eventually brings you back to the Han River (Yeouido). It’s highly rated by riders because it offers a perfect blend of urban scenery and refreshing river views.

Difficulty & Safety Tips

  • Difficulty: Intermediate (Moderate)
  • Total Distance: Approx. 66km

While most of the course is flat and follows dedicated bike paths, it requires a bit of stamina due to the distance.

Note: There is a section between Gwacheon and Indeogwon (before entering Anyang’s Haguicheon) where you must ride on regular public roads. Please stay alert and prioritize safety in this section!

For the Challenge-Seekers: Manghaeam Uphill

If the 66km flat loop isn’t enough for you, try adding a detour to Manghaeam in Anyang. It’s a rewarding uphill climb that will definitely get your heart racing.

Fueling Up: Local Food Recommendations

Gamasot Hoegwan (가마솥회관)

A 35-year-old local favorite in Gwacheon. They are famous for their deep, rich Gomtang (beef bone soup), Dogani-tang, and Yang-gomtang. If you start your ride in the morning, this is the perfect spot for a hearty, high-protein lunch to keep your legs moving.

Pohang Mulhoe (포항물회)

After conquering an uphill climb and breaking a sweat, nothing beats a bowl of Mulhoe (spicy cold raw fish soup). It’s incredibly refreshing and the perfect “cool down” meal for any cyclist.
